Technology can support aging at home, but no device can make a home safe by itself. The most useful products solve a specific problem, are simple enough to use every day, and fit into a larger plan that includes people, routines, home modifications, and professional care when needed.

Start with the problem

  • What risk or daily difficulty are we trying to reduce?
  • Who will set up, test, charge, and maintain the device?
  • What happens if the internet or power goes out?
  • Who receives alerts, and can that person respond?
  • What information does the company collect?
  • What is the full cost after the introductory period?

Technologies often worth considering

Medical alert systems

A wearable call button can connect a person to an emergency-response center or designated contact. Some systems offer automatic fall detection and coverage away from home. Fall detection may miss a fall or trigger a false alert, so it should be treated as an added layer—not a guarantee.

Ask whether the device works outside the home, whether cellular service is included, how often it needs charging, whether it is water resistant, and what cancellation or equipment-return rules apply.
